Indian Legends are all we have on St Augustine
Alligator hunting drawn by Jacques Le Moyne

Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues a French painter, illustrator and explorer, settler of nearby Ft Caroline drew this illustration of a game played by Timucuan Indians in 1564. This game the forerunner of games like Yugioh and Dungeon and Dragons that are a waist of time. Fortunately the settler secretly taught the Indians chess

    • St. Augustine Florida was the first city in America to have chess. King Phillip the II of Spain, the founding Patron of St Augstine was also a chess player and great financier of chess.
    • A very old Indian Legend says, " That in the Spanish Royal court of Philip II the great Bishop Ruy Lopez would demonstrate his chess genus, while others watched.
    • Captain Pedro Menendez de Aviles the founder of St Augustine was also a sevant of Phillip the II in that court. Quite strikingly Menendez would always make annoying recommendations during Lopez's chess games. In order to quiet Menendez, Lopez showing off played him a game while blindfolded. Lopez won! This so angered Menendez that chessplayers had to meet secretly in St. Augustine. You see Menendez had this bothersome habit of having peoples throat cut who upset him."
    • Some St. Augustine chess enthusiasts claim, even today Menendez haunts their games kibitzing with really bad suggestions.
    • One club still keeps the tradition of stealthily moving around from house to house.
